Why Monday Never Arrives: ADHD Procrastination as Brain Biology

Advice about prioritising, batching, and setting goals can be useful, but it often presumes that once a task is correctly identified, the person can begin it in a reasonably linear fashion. For someone struggling with ADHD procrastination, the failure point usually appears earlier, in the unstable interval between knowing and starting, and later, in the equally unstable interval between starting and returning after interruption.

Consider a common office morning. At 9:10 there is one important task, one mildly annoying form, two Slack messages, a calendar alert, and a half-remembered obligation to call the pharmacy. This is the point at which relatives and managers sometimes become impatient, because the accommodations can look childish when judged by the aesthetics of competence. Yet adults use scaffolding in every other demanding domain without shame. Long before many adults receive a diagnosis, they have usually accumulated a private archive of reprimands, failed resets, and humiliating comparisons with people for whom routine tasks require less friction. A useful plan assumes fluctuation, protects transitions, narrows the first move, and expects that emotion will enter the room before concentration does.
