Buddhist Psychology Without Religion

Suffering, anxiety, anger, attachment—these experiences are familiar to everyone. Buddhist psychology offers practical tools for working with the mind rather than religious dogma, and these tools are increasingly supported by modern psychotherapy. In this course, you will explore its key ideas, stripped of metaphysics, and learn how to apply them for more mindful and calm responses to everyday challenges.

The course program covers four fundamental topics of Buddhist psychology: the nature of suffering (дуккха), impermanence (аничча), the absence of a fixed «self» (анатта), and the mechanisms of automatic reactions. You will examine how these concepts relate to cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness practices. Among the specific techniques you will learn are body scanning, observing thoughts and emotions without identification, working with triggers through mindful pauses, cultivating acceptance and non-attachment. Special attention is given to analyzing habitual stress response patterns and gradually transforming them.

The course methodology is based on the principle «learn by doing»: each theoretical position is paired with short practical exercises that you can apply in everyday life. You will learn to distinguish mindful observation from suppressing experiences, and to avoid common mistakes such as trying to «get rid of» unpleasant emotions instead of accepting them. The course does not require prior knowledge of Buddhism or psychology—every term is introduced gradually with examples.

The course is intended for psychologists and psychotherapists seeking additional tools for working with anxiety and stress; teachers and trainers who want to integrate elements of mindfulness into their practice; leaders and managers dealing with emotional burnout; and anyone experiencing chronic stress or wanting to better understand their automatic reactions.

Upon completion of the course, you will have a conceptual framework of Buddhist psychology in its non-religious presentation, be able to recognize key mechanisms of suffering and automatic reactions, and master basic techniques of mindful observation and acceptance. You will receive a set of practical tools for responding more calmly and clearly to anxiety, anger, and attachment, which you can integrate into your professional work or personal practice.
