Personal Boundaries: How to Set and Protect Them
Personal boundaries are the invisible lines that define where you end and others begin. Without them, resentment builds, communication breaks down, and relationships—whether personal or professional—suffer. This course gives you a concrete framework for identifying, communicating, and defending your limits in a way that is respectful, clear, and sustainable.
The programme covers four core areas. First, you will learn to recognize your own boundary preferences using the Boundary Styles Inventory, a tool that distinguishes between porous, rigid, and healthy boundary patterns. Second, you will practice assertive communication techniques such as the Broken Record method, the DESC script (Describe, Express, Specify, Consequences), and the art of saying no without guilt. Third, the course explores common boundary violations—including emotional dumping, over-responsibility, and passive-aggressive testing—and teaches you how to respond with calm authority. Finally, you will examine boundary maintenance across contexts: with family members, in friendships, during academic collaborations, and in workplace hierarchies. Each module includes case studies and role-play scenarios.
Methodologically, the course emphasizes applied practice. You will complete self-assessments, draft personal boundary statements, and rehearse difficult conversations through guided exercises. A dedicated section addresses common pitfalls such as over-explaining, apologizing for boundaries, or retaliating when a boundary is challenged. You will also learn to distinguish between a boundary and a demand, and how to handle pushback while preserving relationships.
This course is designed for professionals who manage teams or client relationships, therapists and counselors seeking practical boundary tools, parents raising teenagers, caregivers supporting family members, and anyone in a helping profession (such as nursing, social work, or teaching) who faces emotional exhaustion from blurred limits. It is also suitable for individuals recovering from codependency patterns or those entering new roles with heightened interpersonal demands.
By the end of the course, you will have a personal boundary plan tailored to your life. You will understand the vocabulary of boundary theory—including terms like enmeshment, differentiation, and containment—and be able to identify boundary dynamics in real-time. You will know how to assess whether a situation calls for a boundary, a compromise, or an accommodation. Most importantly, you will carry a set of repeatable strategies for protecting your energy and integrity without burning bridges.
