Metabolism and Energy
Metabolism is not just a “metabolic rate,” but a complex system for converting food into energy and cellular building blocks. Without understanding its fundamentals, it’s impossible to objectively assess the causes of fatigue, weight fluctuations, or reduced performance. This course provides a systemic view of the physiology of energy balance, free from diet dogmas and oversimplified schemes. You’ll learn how the body decides whether to spend or store resources, and why many popular recommendations contradict its natural mechanisms.
The program covers key topics: the role of adipose tissue as an energy depot and its mobilization during physical activity; mechanisms behind post-lunch sleepiness and its link to the insulin response; the functions of protein in synthesizing enzymes, hormones, and immune factors; the detoxification and metabolic work of the liver—from ammonia processing to regulation of lipid profile. You’ll analyze how glucose and fatty acids compete for oxidation, why ketogenic diets are not a cure-all, and which signals (leptin, ghrelin, insulin) control appetite. Special attention is given to mitochondrial respiration and factors that reduce the efficiency of ATP production.
The course methodology is based on biochemical and physiological data rather than anecdotal evidence. You’ll learn to distinguish correlation from causal relationships—for example, why weight gain is not always the result of a “slowed metabolism,” and why fatigue may be related to a disruption of the Krebs cycle rather than a calorie deficit. Typical interpretation errors will be covered: confusion between glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, the myth of “fat burning” only in the aerobic zone, and incorrect use of the term “basal metabolism.” You’ll gain tools to critically evaluate any nutrition and energy information.

Upon completion, you will master the terminology for describing metabolic pathways (glycolysis, β-oxidation, the citric acid cycle), and you’ll be able to interpret laboratory results (fasting glucose, insulin, HbA1c, lipid panel) in the context of physiology rather than reference ranges. You’ll be able to identify inconsistencies in popular diet concepts and explain them from the perspective of cellular metabolism.
