Salary Negotiations with a Startup Team

Salary negotiations in a startup are a special process where decisions are made quickly and resources are limited. The ability to discuss compensation effectively directly impacts your income and career growth in this environment. This course provides practical tools for preparing for and conducting negotiations, tailored to the realities of startups.

You will learn how to assess your market value considering startup specifics: the company’s development stage, funding volume, and your role. You will study methods for collecting salary data from comparable projects, including using professional reports and networking. Special attention is given to crafting arguments: how to connect your achievements to business value, and how to present your request in the context of the company’s budget. You will also learn how to choose the optimal time for the conversation—for example, after successfully completing a milestone or during a planned review.

A separate block focuses on dialogue tactics with different stakeholders: the founder, the technical lead, and the HR partner. You will review typical objections ("we don’t have a budget", "let’s wait until the next round") and learn how to propose alternative forms of compensation: options, goal-based bonuses, a flexible schedule, training.

The course is built on real cases from startups of different sizes—from pre-seed to Series B. You will analyze examples of both successful and unsuccessful negotiations, practice dialogue scripts, and learn how to document agreements in writing to avoid ambiguity. You will cover common mistakes: setting expectations too high without justification, making concessions without mutual commitments, and ignoring non-monetary compensation.

The course is intended for specialists who already work in a startup or plan to move into one: developers, product managers, designers, marketers, analysts, and other members of cross-functional teams. It will also be useful for team leads and managers who want to better understand the negotiation mechanics from their side.

By the end of the course, you will master a negotiation preparation structure—from gathering market data to documenting outcomes. You will be able to confidently justify a request for a raise or a revision of terms using facts and numbers. You will learn objection-handling tactics and how to evaluate option packages. You will receive ready-to-use templates for email requests and a checklist of key points in the negotiation process.
