Safety cushion: how much and how to save
A financial safety cushion is not an abstract recommendation, but a specific tool that helps you survive a loss of income, major unexpected expenses, or a crisis without debt and panic. The lack of such a reserve is one of the main causes of financial stress: even a single emergency can undermine years of savings. The course provides a systematic understanding of how to calculate your target reserve size, where to store it, and how to top it up so it is available exactly when you need it and doesn’t lose value.
The program covers all key aspects of creating and maintaining a safety cushion. You will review methods for calculating the target amount: from the basic approach “3–6 months of expenses” to more accurate models that account for your professional field, number of dependents, debt burden, and income stability. Storage tools are discussed separately: deposits, savings accounts, money market funds, ОФЗ — with an emphasis on liquidity, yield, and insurance coverage. You will learn how to set up automatic transfers so saving happens without willpower, and how to review the reserve when life circumstances change (job change, childbirth, buying a home). You will also study scenarios for using the safety cushion: when to use it and when it’s better to look for alternative sources, and how to rebuild the reserve after spending.
Special attention is paid to practical applicability. You will receive ready-made templates for calculations, an algorithm for choosing a bank or broker based on your criteria, and a checklist for regular reserve reviews. Common mistakes are covered: keeping the entire amount in cash (inflation and theft risk), excessive diversification (reduced liquidity), using the safety cushion as a “savings pot” for a vacation or equipment. The course is designed so you can apply the knowledge to your budget right away, without abstract theory.
The course is intended for employees who want to protect themselves from job loss; freelancers and owners of microbusinesses with irregular income; young families planning major purchases or children; people who have retired and need to manage liquid savings; and anyone who already has savings but isn’t sure they are organized optimally.
By the end of the course, you will be able to independently calculate the target size of your safety cushion based on your current expenses and income, choose specific financial instruments for storing it considering reliability and liquidity, set up regular contributions, and define rules for using the reserve. You will understand how often to review the amount, how to respond to inflation and budget changes, and how to keep the cushion up to date without daily monitoring.
