Self-Esteem Without Toxic Positivity or Negativity
Self-esteem based on a realistic perception of your own qualities, achievements, and limitations is a key factor for psychological resilience. Without it, you risk getting trapped in extremes: either toxic positivity that dismisses difficulties, or destructive negativity that undermines your belief in yourself. This course offers a systematic approach to building an adequate self-esteem that is free from distortions.
The course program covers several key topics. You will learn to recognize internal beliefs that distort self-esteem, such as mechanisms of comparing yourself to others, perfectionism, and the impostor effect. Techniques such as cognitive restructuring will be discussed to replace automatic negative thoughts with more accurate formulations; you will practice self-observation through a thought and feelings journal, as well as the “three facts” method for an objective assessment of a situation. Special attention is given to self-support skills: you will learn ways to provide constructive internal feedback that helps you account for both strengths and growth areas without self-criticism and self-praise. The course also examines common mistakes in working with self-esteem—for example, confusing self-esteem with self-efficacy, or trying to raise it through external approval.
The course methodology combines theoretical blocks with practical exercises. You will complete self-observation assignments, analyze case studies, and write reflective notes. Particular focus is placed on how to distinguish healthy self-esteem from its extreme forms: you will learn to notice when positive beliefs become toxic (e.g., “just think positive”) and when criticism becomes destructive. The course helps you build an inner dialogue grounded in facts rather than emotional reactions.
The course is intended for helping professionals—psychologists, coaches, consultants—who want to deepen their understanding of the mechanisms of self-esteem and gain practical tools for working with clients. It will also be useful for HR specialists and managers dealing with self-esteem issues in teams, as well as for adults who consciously approach their psychological well-being and want to systematize their knowledge.
By the end of the course, you will have the conceptual toolkit to analyze self-esteem, know key cognitive distortions and ways to correct them, and have a set of practical techniques for daily use. You will be able to distinguish healthy and unhealthy self-esteem, understand how beliefs are formed, and interpret your reactions based on facts. The course provides tools and knowledge rather than promising transformation: the outcome depends on your practice.
