Stress and Cortisol: What Happens to the Body

Stress is not just an emotional state, but a cascade of biochemical reactions affecting every cell in the body. Understanding how the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal axis works makes it possible to distinguish adaptive acute stress from exhausting chronic stress. Without this knowledge, it is impossible to assess why prolonged strain leads to changes in immunity, metabolism, sleep quality, and even appearance. The course provides a systematic view of how cortisol, the key stress hormone, controls these processes and why its imbalance becomes a risk factor for many diseases.

The program sequentially explains the physiology of the stress response: from hypothalamus activation to cortisol release and its interaction with receptors in tissues. You will study how cortisol affects immune cells, suppressing inflammation during short-term stress while weakening defense during chronic stress. Separate modules focus on cortisol’s role in regulating glucose, lipid metabolism, and appetite, as well as its effects on neuroplasticity, memory, and the sleep–wake cycle. The course covers mechanisms linking chronic stress with loss of muscle mass, accumulation of visceral fat, and slowed tissue regeneration. You will learn how to recognize early signs of cortisol imbalance, from morning fatigue to evening hyperactivity.

Special attention is given to practical aspects: reviewing common mistakes in interpreting stress symptoms and typical pitfalls of self-diagnosis. You will learn science-based self-regulation techniques, from breathing protocols to strategies for managing cognitive load. The course does not offer universal solutions, but teaches you to evaluate the effectiveness of methods based on physiological principles: why some approaches work for acute stress but are useless for chronic stress, and how to build everyday habits that minimize activation of the HPA axis.
