Introduction to Meditation: 10 Practices for Beginners
Meditation is often associated with an attempt to “clear the mind,” but this idea doesn’t match either its mechanisms or its goals. The course provides a systematic introduction to the practice based on modern neuroscience findings. You’ll learn why suppressing thoughts is neither a goal nor a success criterion, and how meditation affects attention, emotional regulation, and the autonomic nervous system. The material is structured to help you build a realistic understanding of the process and avoid common disappointments caused by incorrect expectations.
The program covers ten techniques, each explained in detail in terms of logic, scientific rationale, and step-by-step instructions. These include breathing practices (e.g., diaphragmatic breathing and the “4-7-8” method), body scanning, mindfulness in movement, sound meditation, visualization, working with metaphors, and more. For each technique, you’ll understand which cognitive and physiological mechanisms are involved, under which nervous system states it is most effective, and how to adapt the practice to your attention style. Special attention is given to differences between focused attention meditation, open monitoring, and compassion-oriented practices. You’ll learn to recognize the effects of each technique and choose the most appropriate one for a given context.
Methodologically, the course follows the principle of the “minimal effective dose”: you’ll learn how to build a practice without apps or subscriptions, relying only on your own sensations and observations. Typical beginner mistakes are addressed—for example, trying to do long sessions without preparation, ignoring fatigue signals, or attempting to force “emptiness in the head.” You’ll learn how to adjust your practice when sleepiness, anxiety, or irritability appear, and how to plan sessions according to your daily routine and stress level.
The course is designed for adults who want to start practicing meditation intentionally but face conflicting information or don’t know where to begin. It will be useful for professionals in helping professions (psychologists, coaches, educators), managers and employees with high cognitive load, as well as anyone interested in self-regulation methods grounded in evidence-based psychology. Suitable for complete beginners as well as those who have tried meditating but couldn’t develop a consistent habit.
By the end of the course, you’ll understand the fundamental differences between the main types of meditation and be able to choose a technique for a specific objective—reducing anxiety, improving concentration, or supporting emotional recovery. You’ll develop a vocabulary for describing your subjective experience of practice and learn how to interpret your sensations without relying on external apps. You’ll form a realistic view of how to integrate short sessions (as little as 5 minutes) into your everyday schedule using your own criteria for consistency.
